Small Business Develops a Unique Decontamination Device

Bio Chem Decontamination Systems Inc. of Durango Colorado has introduced a unique and powerful decontamination device. Combining the ease and mobility of a simple fire extingusher, with the technically advanced Sandia National Labs' DF-200 decontamination formula, BCDS Inc has developed a hand held portable device that can store the components of the formula separately, and then mix and activate them just prior to deployment.

Most of the modern decontamination formulas that have been developed over the past few years share a common property, they require mixing of separate components, often an enzyme or oxidizer, for activation and effective neutralization. If the formula is mixed too soon before deployment there runs a risk of the decontaminant losing its efficacy over time. Because of this protocols have dictated that in order to insure maximum shelf life these formulas need to be mixed just prior to use. This mixing process normally requires an additional step that is time consuming, holds potential for error and can be awkward and messy. With the new delivery device all of these problems are solved in one step.

The BCDS Inc. M11-RS is a 1.2 liter spray system that is self contained and instantly ready. The formula is already stored within the unit itself. It comes with a mounting bracket and can be mounted on a wall, in a vehicle or be kept in a case with protective equipment. It is powered by a high pressure, inert nitrogen cylinder that is safe for storage and has an indefinite shelf life. Upon pressurization the nitrogen cylinder bursts a plastic internal component cartridge with a pre-measured amount of one or two of the elements of the formula. This mixes with a pre-measured amount of formula in the main body of the canister and the proper ratio for maximum efficacy is achieved. The operator just points, shoots and neutralizing formula works on contact. The canister body is made of stainless steel, will resist corrosion inside and out and is reusable. Refill kits are available and can be used in the field. Each application will cover up to 125 sq. ft.

The BCDS Inc. M11-RS is a unique and valuable tool for the first responder, warfighter and soldier. There is currently nothing available that functions in the capacity of this decontamination device. With its mobility, simplicity, and effectiveness it is a must have countermeasure in the defense against chemical and biological agents and weapons of mass destruction.
